TAF Unearthed, developed by Turbine Art Fair is a mentorship programme aimed at young artists and creatives to enable sustainable creative professional practices. Started in 2014 as the annual Fresh Produce and Talent Unlocked artist mentorship programme. TAF modified the structure of its mentorship to address the needs of artists and prepare and propel them through uncertainty. The mentorship programme has and continues to evolve and adapt to the contextual needs of artists in an everchanging socio-economic climate. Artists are taken through conceptual, artistic and creative business mentoring to help solidify the foundations of their careers, resulting in a curated group exhibition at the Turbine Art Fair in July. The 2022 selected artists are Aneesah Girie, Danna Margo, Gemma Sheppard, Lambi Chibambo, Lerato Ntili, Natali Downing, Pholile Hlongwane, Themba Given Msiza, Tshegofatso Tlatsi & Tumelo Mtklu. The artists will be mentored by  Teboho Ralesai.

This initiative is part of Absa’s ongoing efforts to support communities and improve education outcomes. It will overlap with this year’s Absa Cape Epic, one of the toughest and most beautiful mountain bike stage races in the world. The 2021 edition of the race will see avid mountain bikers from around the globe cover 619 kilometres in distance and 15 250 metres of vertical ascent from the iconic slopes of Table Mountain National Park to the luxury of Val de Vie Estate outside Paarl. The proceeds of the Qhubeka Art session will go toward supporting Qhubeka Charity, an organisation that barters bicycles to better communities. Qhubeka is a Nguni word meaning ‘to carry on’, ‘to progress’, or ‘to move forward’, and is fittingly an official charity partner of the Absa Cape Epic. The piece she chose to be a part of the auction is from a new body of work exploring the sculptural aspects of wood glue, as well as a form of investigation into how the material can conceptually convey pressing issues that are currently plaguing South Africa.

A group show exploring the conceptual relevance and potential of the diptych and triptych. A diptych is a painting, especially an altarpiece, on two hinged wooden panels which may be closed like a book. A triptych is an artwork made up of three pieces or panels. Often used to impart narrative, create a sequence, or show different elements of the same subject matter.

While lockdowns and isolation drive people away from friends and offices, it simultaneously drives them closer to those they share a home with, and the internet. Is our network shifting from kinship to virtual? Or merely rearranging the details of our bonds? Although we do not necessarily recognize this, humankind has also been connected to nature since time and memorial. What are you most connected to?

This magnificent novel juxtaposes geographically distant places, brilliant and playful reflections, and a variety of styles to take its place as perhaps the major achievement of one of the world’s truly great writers.

In 2019, Danna Margo was Invited to participate in the RMB Turbine Art Fair with the For-Sale Group from the Pretoria Art Museum. She chose to display five glue and ink paintings and two framed prints from the body of work entitled 1 1 0 4 3 7 7 9 2 8 (2018). The audience was captivated by the paintings in particular, which resulted in the sale of all five pieces. The Art Fair is a fantastic event that not only provides a platform to display one's work, but also yields endless possibilities for up-and-coming artists to interact and network with multiple buyers, galleries and curators.

The works entitled IV/VII: Description and IV/VII: Depiction explore the various representations of the death of Ophelia, a character created by William Shakespeare for his play entitled Hamlet (1599-1602). The world has witnessed Ophelia’s death in many ways since its conception, be it in a script, book or painting. This reproduction creates multiple perceptions of one character in one event, which initially only existed in the Queen Gertrude’s, another character in the play, description of it. Since then, her death has been depicted by many artists, namely Sir John Everett Millais, who painted her surrounded by symbolic flowers as she is slowly weighed down by her garments into the water.

I chose to explore these representations because I am fascinated by the phenomenological experience of texts and images. In particular, the way in which they are reproduced and how this creates layer upon layer of meaning that ripples through each rendition.
