The Pellucid series (2021)
Mixed media photography
Dimension varies
In the work entitled ‘The Pellucid series’, one is confronted with elements of distortion and degradation, alluding to a sense of soft violence. I’ve always been interested in cultural mobility and the way in which texts and images cross borders, disappear, change, return, are translated and decimated. This may span over seconds or centuries; the results will always vary despite the original material and the intentions behind it. It is for this reason that I have chosen texts/images from my childhood in South Africa, during the first few years of its juvenile democracy. The body of work began with the attempt to capture the odd sensation of looking back and how each time you do, the material before you never seem quite the same. In short a “No man ever steps in the same river twice” kind of scenario.
